Lago Da Alfarofia, a 6-hectare gem nestled in the charming Portuguese town of Elvas, just 5 kilometers from Badajoz (Spain), is a must-visit for fishing enthusiasts. Since its inception in late 2007, the lake has gained renown among carp anglers, becoming a favoured destination for angling.

With an intriguing history, the lake was initially constructed in April 1992 to provide irrigation water. In the same year’s July, it was stocked with 1,500 young royal carp and 1,000 young black bass. While it took 15 years for the first carp anglers to discover it after its creation, the locals have long been drawn to black bass fishing, a pastime that has occupied their leisure hours.

Spanning 6 hectares and boasting a capacity of 100,000 cubic meters, Alfarofia lake has an average depth of 3–4 meters, with a maximum depth of 6 meters, making it an ideal fishing environment. The lake’s water experiences near-constant renewal almost year-round, as a substantial amount of water leaves for irrigation and then returns via an inflow canal. This ensures consistently high water quality, abundant oxygen levels, and a stable water level throughout the year.

Home to a significant crayfish population and around 7,000 square meters of cattails, the lake provides a natural habitat for its inhabitants, offering nourishment and breeding grounds. Moreover, natural predators contribute to maintaining equilibrium and controlling the carp and other fish populations.

Carp fishing started in Lago Da Alfarofia in January 2007 and has yielded impressive catches over time, with the largest recorded catch to date weighing in at 25 kilograms (55 lbs).
